Spunky the Wonder Dog, Smelly Saga...

I always had such hopes and dreams of Spunky wearing
this little sweater as he trotted down the highway to
town every day.  But apparently Spunky had hopes and
dreams that did not include wearing a sweater.  He shed
this sweater in his doghouse before leaving for work
one happy day.

You can see that Spunky appears to be most ashamed and
humiliated to be seen in these stripes.  I thought it fit
perfectly and left plenty of room for his hobby of marking
all tires, all bushes, and anything that dared to stand still.

Since I relayed this tale on Ree's site recently, I thought
I better finish it here.

Spunky loved to roll around in anything dead he could
find.  So his habit of trapsing into town every day gave
him plenty of opportunity to find roadkill and such lovely
items to drench his body with.  One day, he must have found
a super stinky find to roll in.  When he arrived at my husband's
shop he greeted the guys with joy and a special odour.  After
staying there several hours, the guys had all they could take.
They sent Spunky out of the shop with orders to go home.
Spunky, being the very social dog, decides to head across the
highway to main street.  He enjoyed exploring the alleys and
quite possibly the sidewalks.  I never got to witness this too
many times but this day I did.  I just happened to be going to
the bank drive-thru and I am sitting there.  A bank clerk looks
out and sees Spunky and says, "Isn't that your dog?"  I look and
yes there is Spunky checking out the garbage and some stray
cats in the alley.  I laugh and say, "Yes, that is."  So I finish my
business and drive out the alley from the bank.  I stop and say
hi to Spunky and he begins to follow my van.  I turn down main
street and park at the Dollar Store.  Spunky is right there happy
to see me uptown.  I go into the store and begin to shop.  Shortly
thereafter, someone opens the door and in runs Spunky.  I forgot
to mention that I had talked to my husband at lunch and he had
told me how they had run Spunky out of the shop that day because
of his stench.  So I knew he stunk.  stank?  Well, anyway, Spunky
comes running down the aisles until he gets to me.  He is so happy!
I turn quickly and walk to another aisle because here come the
store clerks chasing Spunky.  I pretend that I don't know who
this dog belongs to.  Not mine!  They are laughing and they have
to grab his collar to get him out of the store.  Now they are
talking about who he might belong to.  I slowly exit the store,
not buying anything.  Spunky is waiting for me.  I get in my
van and drive down main street with Spunky walking right
behind my van down the middle of main street.  Whose dog
is that?  Could this be a clue?  Spunky had many adventures
and I will continue in the future.  He was full of spunk!

Spunky the Wonder Dog, More Saga...

Now for the continuation of the saga, where did we leave off?  Ah, yes, the pitter patter of his paws...
Spunky had an unusual habit.  This habit began years ago.
Spunky started his habit of going to work every day.  After my husband left for work, off Spunky would go (on his own four legs).  Sometimes early, sometimes a little later.  He would walk two miles down the highway to town.  He usually walked in the ditch.  I am sure he had a little rut worn after several years.  You can see in the picture above the rut he had made in our back yard.  He went to work winter, spring, summer, and fall.  (All you'd have to do is call) :D
He started showing up at the shop in town and he would be so happy to be there.  Some one would open the door and in he would go.  This was a machine shop, pretty dirty with oilfield grease, so no problem for Spunky to be inside.  In the spring, summer, and fall the doors would be opened up anyway.  Spunky was in hog heaven.  They kept a cat at the shop, so he had cat food to eat, could follow hubby around, watch the action going on, go outside, stand in the highway, and keep busy pacing back and forth.  (He was like a small soldier-like I said before think "Hitler").  This dog never kept still unless he was asleep.  After a hard day at work, Spunky would walk home and plenty of times my husband gave him a ride in the bed of his pickup.  He would tell Spunky to get in and even though he had short legs, he could jump high.  Spunky's next escapade involved rolling.........to be continued.  The first post about Spunky can be found here.

Spunky the Wonder Dog, the Saga continues...

Here, of course, is Spunky as a little tyke. He didn't stay that way long though.

Here is Spunky, all grown up, happy-go-lucky guy that he was.
Spunky had a touch of the ol' OCD though, had to have things
in their place, especially the cats. He was a control freak, if
they just moved, he was ready to pounce on them. And the
funny thing was, he couldn't wait for them to move so he
could punish this behavior. He was a small dictator, much
like Hitler. Probably in his blood...and bones.

Spunky had quirky little habits. He was rather fond of turtle
soup, minus the soup. He had them "turtles on the half shell"
instead. No box turtle or terrapin was safe in our yard. I have
rescued many a turtle when I could. He would have them down,
cracking them open with his teeth, and carrying them from
place to place, and start the process of crackation. Like my new
word? I would have to take the turtles down the road for a
short trip away from our yard if there was to be any hope of
their survival. If I would just toss them over the fence, Spunky
was on them in a few seconds. He was a master escapee (a
whole other story). So whenever I mowed the grass on my riding
lawn mower, there Spunky would be running up and down in
front of, behind, or beside me. Pacing away, one of his favorite
pasttimes. I think he needed replacement soles on his feet.
He could travel for miles.....and that is another story....
.....to be continued........

Spunky the Wonder Dog

My friend Donna suggested I write about my dog Spunky after I made a comment on her blog.
First, I must backtrack and tell you about the previous dogs we have owned. Our first dog was named Farfo (after the cartoon many years ago). He was a stray that we took in, all in all a pretty good dog. He was with us for several years, I can't really remember his demise.

Farfo and hubby. (If you look over to the left,
you can see the Arkansas River)
Our second dog we bought was a registered Doberman Pinscher. We got him as a pup and went through the process of having his ears and tail cut. He was a good dog, not all that smart but pretty sweet. We lived out in the country. We always have actually. The doberman was named Jasper because he was black. But not too good of a guard dog if you ask me because somebody stole him.

I don't remember what he got into but he sure looks guilty!

He was a fine specimen of a dog!

Next came Molly the border collie. We bought her for the kids. She did not turn out like we thought, not all that bright either. She ended up being given away after she growled at a little neighbor child. She was black also so I thought "Molly" was very fitting. Black Molly, which I think is a very common name for a border collie. But I didn't know that at the time.

Now for Spunky. We got Spunky for our son. His father (Spunky's, not my son's) was a rat terrier and his mother was a cocker spaniel, both full blood. They lived in the same house and got mixed up together creating Spunky and his litter buddies. He was a cutie. We (our son really) decided not to cut his tail. Spunky was very aptly named. You know that cartoon about a dog and a cow. He pretty much looked like that dog to me. Just a fat little white bundle with black spots on his side like a kidney bean. His body was a rat terrier, but his head more like a cocker spaniel (ear wise anyway). We kept him in the house for a short time as a puppy but soon he became the outdoor dog. We have never had a dog living in our house before this.
Spunky could jump so high. We had back and front storm doors just alike. They had glass window half way up. He would jump straight up in the air so he could peer into the house. Boing! Boing! Just like a kangaroo. It's quite a sight to see a little dog jumping up and down like that.
Spunky was quite the popular dog in our town. I think most people (in our town) have seen this dog for he had an unusual habit....
to be continued.....
Yes, I am leaving you hanging....and it reminds me of someone else who leaves us hanging but I don't think Spunky is quite the hiney tingler as that. But you know what? I'm going to pretend to myself that he is...
