Halloween Scare

Once upon a time, a family of six went trick or treating together.  The father drove his car with all four children dressed in some manner of costume.  The costumes were certainly home-made as this family was fairly poor.  The four children carried big brown paper grocery sacks to hold their cache of Halloween candy that they would be receiving.  Father drove the children into the small town that they lived in (this little family lived way out in the country with houses few and far between).  The three older boys walked with their little sister down sidewalks and up to front porches that had their lights on.  The boys rang the doorbell and when the doors were opened, "Treat or Treat" was chorused loudly.  We soon had our bags half full which equalled lot of candy and popcorn balls.  The little girl was five years old, and her brothers were almost 7, almost 9, and ten years of age.
Suddenly, a pick-up truck with three high school boys stopped near the children as they were leaving another house with their sacks of goodies.  The little girl was in front of the boys walking towards their car.  The high school boys ran towards the little brothers and stole their sacks.  The little sister ran as fast as she could to her parent's car and jumped in with her sack.  The brothers also ran to the car and jumped in crying.
Father started the car and took off after the high school boys' truck.  The chase was on and it was fast.  We finally ended up at a dead end and the edge of a cliff.  No pick-up in sight, but dust was flying.  They didn't go off the cliff though.  We never knew where they went.
The family returned to their home in the country with only one sack half full of candy.  The little sister had to share her candy with her three brothers.  She was somewhat disappointed 'cause it would have been a huge load of candy and lasted a long time.  Father was certainly mad about those rotten high school boys stealing candy from children.  But Mother had been so afraid that they were after the little girl and very thankful that we were all safe.
The little girl that grew up of course was me.  My husband and I never celebrated Halloween with our children.  We always took them to a Hallelejuah Night which was a dress-up in costumes at church with games and candy and prizes.

I found this little funny from Sandy and she found it from momunscripted.

Thanks for the visit ...

Do your kids miss the Trick or Treat?

Better question - do they care?

They are grown now, 21, 22, and 25. They didn't miss anything. We celebrated another way with just as much candy. Some church in town even set up booths where you could bring your children to collect candy. I mean, that's the bottom line, the candy! :D They did the costumes, only the figures weren't scary demons or witches.

I cannot BELIEVE anyone would do something like that. What a bunch of jerks.

And just think this was the year 1962.

My mil taught dh to say "Bless or treat" instead of "Trick or Treat". She didn't like the thought of threatening (even in jest) to play a trick on someone because they didn't give candy. I really don't care for Halloween, but we have taken the kids trick or treating most years until about age 12 just because it's fun to dress up and get candy. I love costumes.

Shoot! I got distracted by dd walking in the door and hit enter too soon.

That is a scary Halloween story. Dh would have chased those boys, too, and I would have been gripping the dash with white knuckles and begging him to stop. I'm glad no one went over that cliff. It's quite a mystery where they went though. Did you ever try to find out by driving the route in the day time to see if there was a road or drive they could have turned down?

Yes, my dad looked again in the day but I was too young to know anything else.

Thanks for sharing your story. Very scary.
We have never went trick or treating either. We have always done the Hallelejuah Night until this year. Since I left our church about a month ago we have no place to go. Dan is going to take the kids to his families' homes, but it's still not the same. We have been visiting a local Baptist church and they had a costume party. Still a little different, but the kids had fun.
Did yall ever figure who the teens where?
Pray that God will give me direction.
Thank you!

Kitten: No, my dad might have figured it out but I never did think to ask him since I was only five. And now I can't ask him of course since he passed away. Lots of little things I think now of asking him! Shoot. I will pray for you.

Well that really stinks. There always has to be a few bad apples in the bunch. So funny you could have been writing about us when we were little. Quite similar backgrounds....except the part where the candy was taken. If we went trick or treating it had to be in town as well. We didn't go every year.

Those mean rotten high schoolers. They sure had some balls to do that in front of your dad.

I'm catching up on blog reading but just had to comment and say I hope those teens still carry that guilt to this day. Rotten souls.
